The Substance
The filmmaker's unflinching satire tackles the demanding standards for women's appearance as well as the perceived horrors of growing older. The veteran actress offers a brilliant portrayal as Elisabeth, a mature celebrity forced into hosting a workout series on television. Edged out due to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out a secretive and terrifying procedure called "The Substance". This produces a youthful duplicate called Sue, leading to an increasingly parasitic dynamic between the two. October 17th, the streaming service Paramount+

Presence
Soderbergh challenges his directorial skills in this clever paranormal narrative shot entirely through the eyes of the phantom. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their fresh home, the camera – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. Chloe seems aware of the ghostly being, and the entity appears guarding her. But why? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. This Creepy Thriller
Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest holds up well without requiring a continuation. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, multiple child abductions has left the children frightened. When Finney is kidnapped by the villain and held captive in a dungeon, he fears a fatal end. Yet the disconnected phone in the room keeps ringing, with eerie communicators giving advice, and the prescient dreams of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, 10.50pm, Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the struggle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for greed in this director's wonderfully garish film adaptation about the fallen TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye begin monetising the nation's religious faith. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, overdone appearance and bad faith, though the lead actress achieves to present Tammy Faye in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, late night, on Film4
The Spy Mystery
The current week's another release from Steven Soderbergh presents a espionage tale as precise as the polo necks sported by Fassbender's British agent. His assignment is to identify a traitor within their ranks from a group of five – one of whom is his own wife. Both actors are experts of deadpan cool, so a delicious psychological game of deception or honesty takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, various showings, Sky Cinema
