The acclaimed filmmaker's mythic action epic, The Odyssey, is a film audiences have been anticipating since its announcement. It firmly sits among the most hotly anticipated motion pictures coming next year. In a festive surprise, a trailer has finally arrived, though it's hampered due to the platform's low-quality encoding—perhaps explaining why Nolan initially kept the preview exclusive to cinemas.
A First Glimpse at the Legendary Cast
This first look reveals Matt Damon portraying the king of Ithaca. We also see Tom Holland as Telemachus alongside Anne Hathaway depicting the loyal wife. In a poignant moment, the character pleads with Odysseus to promise he will return, only for him to look up and question what occurs should he fail. The trailer also offers a quick, obscured look at Polyphemus the Cyclops, whose flock Odysseus and his crew steal on their treacherous voyage.
Adapted from a cornerstone of Western literature, The Odyssey follows the lengthy quest of the legendary King of Ithaca. After his triumph at Troy, which is depicted within the companion epic, Odysseus endures an extended and hazardous road home.
Legendary Obstacles and a Star-Studded Lineup
Along his path, Odysseus confronts numerous obstacles and mythical beings. These include the enchantress Circe, known for turning humans into pigs, and the deceptive Sirens. Regardless of these ordeals, his sworn oath is to do whatever it takes to get back to Penelope and Telemachus in Ithaca.
The adaptation's cast is remarkably star-studded. Joining Damon, Holland, and Hathaway are Charlize Theron as the cunning Circe, together with Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal.
A Story Repeatedly Told
Homer's epic has inspired many reinterpretations throughout history. These range from contemporary versions and a late-90s dance production. There has even been adapted into a musical called Epic: The Musical, presented as a multi-part album series.
A full-length preview was long awaited following the project's reveal and a short teaser clip which was initially shown only on the big screen. That footage later made its way onto the internet soon after.
