In a inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” New York City, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.

A Historic Leader

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the public whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
